Verknipt Malaysia 2026 brought the unmistakable intensity of hard techno to Malaysia through a production built around the connection between music, lasers and audience energy.
At the center of the production was a network of twelve high-powered laser projectors controlled with Pangolin BEYOND and FB4 control hardware. Combining timecode synchronization with responsive live operation gave the laser designer the precision and flexibility needed to complement a relentless, fast-moving performance.
Behind the Lasers: Madz.fxs
The show’s laser design, programming and live operation were handled by @madz.fxs, who was responsible for translating the energy of the music into a cohesive visual experience.
Taking on the combined roles of designer, programmer and operator provided continuity throughout the creative process. The initial visual concepts could be carried directly into programming and then adapted during the live performance.
The challenge was to create laser sequences that matched the intensity of hard techno without allowing the visuals to become repetitive or overwhelming. Beam movements, colors and transitions had to remain smooth and intentional, even as the music moved rapidly between builds, breakdowns and drops.
Careful programming and extensive testing were essential. Each sequence was developed to support the musical structure while contributing to the larger visual identity of the show. During the performance, live control allowed Madz.fxs to respond to the atmosphere in the venue and maintain a direct connection between the lasers, the music and the crowd.
The Laser Installation
The production used twelve 40-watt laser projectors, strategically positioned around the stage and venue to produce expansive aerial effects and immerse the audience in the show.
Distributing the projectors throughout the space allowed the design to extend beyond a conventional stage-focused presentation. Coordinated beams created layers of light above and around the audience, producing architectural patterns, wide-reaching aerial looks and moments of concentrated visual impact.
The placement of the projectors also made it possible to build depth into the design. Individual laser positions could work independently or combine into larger synchronized compositions, giving the production a wide visual range throughout the performance.
Pangolin BEYOND at the Center of the Workflow
Pangolin BEYOND served as the central creative and control platform for the laser production. All programming, cue sequencing, zoning, color adjustments and timeline work were completed within the software.
This consolidated workflow allowed the designer to build, refine and organize the show in one environment. BEYOND’s timeline tools supported detailed synchronization for preprogrammed sections, while its cue-based capabilities enabled responsive live operation during other parts of the performance.
For a production moving at the speed of hard techno, reliability was crucial. BEYOND provided stable playback throughout the event, allowing the operator to concentrate on the creative execution of the show rather than the underlying control system.
Timecode & Live Operation
The show used a hybrid approach that combined timecode synchronization with live MIDI control.
Selected portions of the performance were programmed to timecode, enabling laser cues to align precisely with specific musical moments. This frame accurate synchronization helped maximize the impact of important breakdowns, transitions and drops.
The remaining sections were operated live using an AKAI APC40 MKII MIDI controller. This gave Madz.fxs control over the laser cues and the freedom to react to changes in the music and energy of the audience.
Together, these methods offered the best of both workflows: the precision of carefully programmed timecode sequences and the spontaneity of live operation.
Reliable Control with FB4
The complete projector network was controlled using Pangolin FB4 hardware. FB4 provided stable, frame-accurate communication and synchronization across all twelve laser projectors.
With multiple high-powered projectors distributed throughout the venue, consistent playback was essential. FB4 helped ensure that cues were reproduced accurately across the installation, preserving the timing and spatial relationships of the programmed effects.
The integration between BEYOND and FB4 created a dependable foundation for the production, supporting both the detailed timecoded sequences and the live-controlled portions of the show.
